Kodagu may not benefit from support price for paddy

60 per cent of growers have sold paddy for less price!
Farmers in Kodagu district have incurred losses, with the delay in the announcement of support price for paddy.

Normally, paddy is harvested during November-December. However, the state government had directed the Food and Civil Supplies Corporation to procure paddy under support price on February 1. Owing to financial crunch, several farmers had sold paddy for a meagre of Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,200 per quintal before February itself. Now the government has announced support price of Rs 1,530 per quintal paddy (A grade). This includes Rs 250 financial assistance from the State government.

More than 60 per cent of the farmers in the district have sold paddy for less rate. Last year, there was an overwhelming response for the paddy purchase and the government had literally struggled to get a godown to store the procured paddy. The support price for paddy was Rs 1,360 for ‘A’ grade quality. According to the sources, paddy was sown in 35,000 hectare land. The total production is 1.20 lakh tonne.

Paddy farmer Roji Chinnappa said “the government should announce support price in the month of December itself. Who will be benefited, if it was announced during February?” he asked.

Paddy purchasing centres have been opened at Madikeri, Gonikoppa and Kushalnagar, 15 days ago. Less than 1,000 quintal paddy has been purchased so far. The paddy can be purchased upto March 31.

Paddy is grown with the help of irrigation facilities in Mandya, Mysore, Koppala and Gangavathi. With available water, the yield is more. As a result, there is great demand for paddy grown under irrigation facilities. However, in Kodagu paddy cultivation depends on rainfall. If there was poor rainfall, then it will affect the yield and quality.

The paddy grown in the district does not get good price when compared to other districts. Hence, farmers sell the paddy in the district itself. The merchants cheat the farmers by purchasing the paddy by paying less price.
