Kodava cultural troupes presented a variety of folklore display that reverberated at “Sunny Side”, once the residence of Gen. K.S. Thimayya in Madikeri on Saturday to mark the 107th birth anniversary of the sixth Chief of Army Staff of India.
The event featured “Bolakkat” and “Kolatt”, “Dudikottpat” by traditionally attired Kodava men, and “Ummathat” by Kodava women at “Sunny Side”, now housing the Kodagu Regional Transport Office. Cultural troupes represent the Kodava samaja units from Mysore, Bangalore, apart from all parts of Kodagu. The Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa-General K.S. Thimayya Forum organised the event. The forum made an appeal to the State Transport Department officials to shift the RTO from “Sunny Side” to pave way for General K.S. Thimayya Memorial.
Earlier, the management of General Thimayya Public School, accompanied by students, offered floral tributes to the statue of soldier-general in the city. The president of the management committee of the school, Matanda Suresh Chengappa, secretary Ratan Kuttaiah, and teaching staff were present.
Members of the management and students took out a procession from the school to General Thimayya Circle.
Maj. Gen. K.S. Venugopal, GOC, K and K Sub Area, said that the courage and valour of Gen. Thimayya was a great inspiration for Indian armed forces. Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa and Gen. K.S. Thimayya had given signal contributions to the nation. They should inspire the youth to enlist in the armed forces, he said. The Army would provide all assistance to General Thimayya Memorial proposed to be established at “Sunny Side”, he added.
He unveiled the Kannada version of “Thimayya of India” translated by Bacharaniyanda P. Appanna.
Mysore-Kodagu MP A.H. Vishwanath eulogised the heroics of Gen. Thimayya who had subdued the enemies through his military acumen. The nation had honoured the General with Padma Bhushan, he said.
President of the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat Ravi Kushalappa spoke. Lt. Gen. B.C. Nanda (retd.), Deputy Commissioner N.V. Prasad, Superintendent of Police Manjunath Annigeri, Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat N. Krishnappa, and president of the forum Col. Kandratanada Subbayya (retd.) were among those present. The Bagpiper Band stole the show on the occasion.
