The 107th birth anniversary of General Thimmaiah was observed at his ancestral house ‘Sunny side’ on Saturday.
The folk dance and cultural programmes added colour to the programme.
The programme was organised by Field Marshal Cariappa and General Thimmaiah Forum and was attended by Goa, Karnataka and Kerala region Commander Major General K S Venugopal.
Speaking on the occasion, he said “Field Marshal K M Cariappa and General Thimmaiah were inspiration for Indian army.”
“It was my dream to visit the land where General Thimmaiah was born. People like General Thimmaiah should join Indian force. We will provide all support to the library which is functioning from his ancestral house.”
He announced Rs 50,000 to Field Marshal Cariappa and General Thimmaiah Forum.
MP H Vishwanath said programme to remember Guddemane Appayya Gowda, Field Marshal Cariappa and General Thimmaiah was held recently.
General Thimmaiah who was responsible for defeating Pakistan was an asset of the country.
Zilla Panchayat President Shantheyanda Ravi Kushalappa said that Thimmaiah’s birth anniversary will be observed as government programme in the future. To create awareness on the life of General Thimmaiah, Zilla Panchayat will organise essay writing competition for primary, high school and College students.
He said “measures will be taken to shift RTO office which is functioning from Sunny Side. A museum on Thimmaiah will be set up. There is a need to preserve all the materials used by Thimmaiah including his gun.”
Lieutenant (retd) Biddanda C Nanda, Air Marshal (retd) K C Cariappa, Field Marshal Cariappa, General Thimmaiah Forum President Col (retd) K C Subbaiah, Secretary Ulliyanda M Poovaiah, Deputy Commissioner Dr N V Prasad, SP Manjunath Annigeri, ZP CEO N Krishnappa and others were present.
Mukkodlu Valleydue Association, Kodava Samaja from Mysore, Kodava Samaja from Bangalore presented ‘Bolakat,’ ‘Kolata’ and ‘Ummathat’ on the occasion. ‘Samaraveera General Thimmaiah’ a translated book by Bacharaniyanda Appanna was released on the occasion.
