ALLEGED ENCROACHMENT BY ACF: OFFICIALS CONDUCT INSPECTION

ALLEGED ENCROACHMENT BY ACF: OFFICIALS CONDUCT INSPECTION

Based on a complaint filed by an NGO against a Forest Department officer, accusing the latter of encroaching Reserve Forest land, a team of Forest Department personnel conducted an inspection of the said land in Devamachi Reserve Forest near Thithimathi in south Kodagu this morning.
Chief Conservator of Forests (Kodagu Circle) Brijesh Kumar Dikshit, who led the team, told SOM later that encroachment of Forest land under Survey No. 76/1, said to be under the possession of the family of ACF K.D. Belliappa, has been confirmed.
"There is no doubt that forest land has been encroached upon. However, the extent of encroachment and those involved can be ascertained only after a thorough perusal of the records as there are too many documents involved," said the CCF and added that he would be submitting a report to the government by April 2.
Replying to a query, he also said that the Central Government had approved of the said land for regularisation under the Akrama-Sakrama scheme, as it had been cultivated as a coffee plantation, along with such encroachments by many others.
It may be recalled that social activist M.G. Prabhu, who is also the Director of Hunsur-based Indian Institute of Tribal Education, had at a press conference in Mysore on Mar. 10 last, accused ACF Belliappa of encroaching 18.20 acres of forest land in the Reserve Forest. Prabhu had also lodged a complaint with the Principal Chief Conservator of Fore-sts A.K. Verma about the alleged encroachment, based on which an investigation was ordered.
